It is broader than the term telehealth, which refers to the delivery of health-related services and information using telecommunication technologies. E-health (also written ehealth) encompasses telemedicine and telehealth, as well as all health-related electronic technologies, such as electronic billing, data collection, and population management. HeartSong uses electronic communications at all levels of practice management.


Telemedicine is a way to consult with a physician virtually, using telecommunication technologies such as telephone, email, and/or skype. HeartSong provides telemedical services for people who cannot travel to Vermont.   For people who already receive care at HeartSong, phone, email, secure messaging and fax are used to enhance communication between people receiving treatment and their clinicians. Practice Management

Information about you, your health, and your history of treatment at HeartSong is stored in a secure web-based practice management system that interfaces with a protected patient portal, called Patient Fusion, that allows you to access to your personal health information. Medical specialists also have protected access to your electronic medical chart for the purposes of coordinating care effectively.

My experience with email communication with my doctor at HeartSong is great, it works really well for me. I get responses within a reasonable amount of time and my questions are answered adequately.

Sometimes, in a telephone conversation, a doctor might give instructions and/or an opinion. I might forget details, if I don't take notes. However, if I get these instructions or opinions in an email, I can refer back to them.

Personally, I like email, because I don't feel that I am putting my doctor under pressure to return my phone call during a socially acceptable time, and I can email her at any time and don't have to remember to call her during business hours.
