Right Medicine

"Complementary medicine" is a term used by conventional (allopathic) medical practitioners to describe therapies that complement their treatments. In this worldview, conventional medicine is considered to be the principle (dominant) form of medical care while all other medical disciplines are adjunctive (subordinate).

At HeartSong, we know that all therapies have a potential value in healing. No one medical discipline is therefore considered subordinate to another without consideration of the specific circumstances where it will be used. The key to quality medical care is to choose the right medicine for you at a given point in time, and to give it to you it in the right strength (dose). This is the practice of right medicine.

Therapeutic Ladder

Different medical interventions can be distinguished from one another along a continuum -- or 'ladder' of ascending strength -- in terms of the degree to which they alter, or invade, the organism when used to help restore normal function to a diseased area or system. Less invasive therapies help restore health with minimal disturbance to the organism; they are lower down on the therapeutic ladder. More invasive therapies alter the organism in significant ways; they are higher on the ladder. HeartSong turns to medical specialists when treatments higher on the therapeutic ladder are needed.

Medical Specialization

Since it is impossible for any one individual to develop expertise in all fields of medical specialization, many physician choose to study how to diagnosis and treat diseases associated with one particular area or system of the body. In making this decision, they forfeit the opportunity to develop in-depth relationships with the people who come to them for care because most specialized care is needed for only a short period of time.

These highly trained individuals are a vital thread in the fabric of our health care system. It is because of their commitment to perfect their skills that HeartSong is able to provide you with comprehensive care of the highest quality care for all medical conditions.

Prescription Medications

The "therapeutic ladder" principle acknowledges that natural therapies and medicines are sometimes insufficient for restoring health and/or relieving symptoms associated with medical conditions for which complete cure is unlikely. In 2009, the State of Vermont approved a specialized formulary (list) of prescription medications that limits what naturopaths can prescribe.   In 2013,  the Vermont Legislature expanded the formulary to include all prescription medication.   In order to obtain the special endorsement for full prescription rights, naturopaths will be required to take an advance course in modern pharmacology and pass an exam.   HeartSong's physician anticipates completing all requirements for full prescription authority by the summer of 2014.
